In May of 2015 we held a symposiumincluding representatives from the 26 research teams selected for the 2013-2015 cohort of “Mapping the Landscape, Journeying Together”, as well as leaders in the fields of healthcare and health professions education. During the symposium:
- Each team shared their findings, illuminated best practices, and discussed evidence gaps through a 3-5 minute dynamic presentation.
- Teams took part in skill-based training in the use of social media, story-telling, writing for the popular press, and research design so that they can use their findings to propel change toward more humanistic healthcare systems and culture.
- Through small group conversation, reflection exercises and planning for future work, a community of practice was established. An online communication mechanism has been established so that the group can continue to interact, nurturing new cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional collaborations.
Most of the manuscripts from the “Mapping the Landscape, Journeying Together” project are under consideration or have been accepted for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and several will form the basis for a thematic issue in the journal Medical Education.
