“Breaking Down Barriers Brick by Brick: Addressing Vaccine Deliberation,” supported by Siemens Healthineers

The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is delighted to release this new Gold Human InSight Webinar, supported by Siemens Healthineers, “Breaking Barriers Brick by Brick: Addressing Vaccine Deliberations.”

In this important conversation, Gold Trustee Dr. Kimberly Manning and Dr. Valeria Cantos share how to build trust in a healthcare system that has failed many people of color and create a humanistic, person-centered approach to vaccine deliberation. Dr. Manning is a general internist/hospitalist at Grady Memorial Hospital and Associate Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Department of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, where she is a Professor of Medicine and residency program director. Dr. Cantos is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine and has been a principal investigator on COVID-19 vaccine studies. She is also an attending physician at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Siemens Corporation President and CEO Barbara Humpton serves as the “ignitor” of this vibrant discussion that will help broaden your understanding of the myriad factors in the vaccine rollout during the COVID-19 pandemic. Siemens Healthineers is a  member of the Gold Corporate Council, a group of leading healthcare companies that support humanism in healthcare and the Gold Foundation.

Part of the inspiration for this webinar came from Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, a viral immunologist and one of the main scientists behind the development of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine. In a conversation with CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, she shared her thoughts around people’s deliberations regarding the vaccine: ” … trust, especially when it has been stripped from people, has to be rebuilt in a brick-by-brick fashion. And so, what I say to people, firstly, is that I empathize and then, secondly, is that I’m going to do my part in laying those bricks. And I think that if everyone on our side, as physicians and scientists, went about it that way, then the trust would start to be rebuilt.”

This webinar was first featured in the Humanism & Healing Conference, hosted by the Gold Humanism Honor Society. While the guidance around human connection and outreach remains as relevant as ever, data such as vaccination numbers and locations of coronavirus variants date to spring 2021.
