The COVID-19 pandemic has created immense upheaval in the world. We salute our healthcare professionals. Their courage, compassion and dedication to their patients is humanism in action. We are so grateful for their incredible work in this unprecedented time.
Every year we celebrate such extraordinary humanism at our Annual Gala, bringing together so many who believe strongly in our mission. In 2021, our Annual Gala was virtual and held on Thursday, June 10th.
We honored hundreds of Champions of Humanistic Care and awarded the 2021 National Humanism in Medicine Medal to three titans of humanism in healthcare: Dr. Anthony Fauci, Dr. Wayne Riley, Dr. Eric Topol. Read more about them below. Dr. Fauci accepted his medal on behalf of all healthcare professionals who have cared with such compassion and courage in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The host for the 2021 Annual Gala was Gold Trustee Dr. Kimberly Manning, a spectacular champion of humanism in healthcare who has been a national advocate for a deeper understanding of vaccine deliberation throughout the pandemic. Dr. Manning is a general internist/hospitalist at Grady Memorial Hospital and Associate Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Department of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, where she is a Professor of Medicine and residency program director. She is a prolific writer and authors a blog called “Reflections of a Grady Doctor,” which was named in 2010 by O, The Oprah Magazine, as one of four medical blogs you should read.
