The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is proud to announce a new, free resource for health professions educators, students, and academic and corporate leaders: the Practical Applications of Humanism Database.
This new database is available on the Gold Foundation website as a curated repository of studies, tools, webinars, curriculum guides, and much more, all designed to help foster humanistic care, in education and in practice. Click here to visit the Practical Application of Humanism Database.
“I am so excited about this launch,” said Elizabeth Cleek, Chief Program Officer and Vice President at the Gold Foundation. “We are looking to make strategies for humanistic practice more widely available and accessible, and to connect our community – those who care deeply about healthcare that is compassionate and collaborative in addition to being scientifically excellent – so that all can connect with and learn from the advances that others have made. We hope people will reach out to us with more entries and that this will become a ‘go-to’ resource for those looking for strategies to implement humanistic practice.”
Ann Bruder, Director of Program Initiatives at the Gold Foundation, has been building the database over several months.
“There are simply so many great tools and lessons about humanistic care from those funded by the Gold Foundation, as well as others created by outside funders, and no single place to find them all. We knew there was a need, and we hope this new database grows quickly, and people share it as a resource to learn more about putting humanism into action,” said Ms. Bruder.
The database currently has more than 45 entries. Some offer links to free downloadable resources.
For example, the project “Fostering Humanism through Reflection and Advocacy” features work by Dr. Louise Aronson of the University of California, San Francisco, a Gold Professor and the 2016 Jordan J. Cohen Lecturer on Humanism in Medicine. Among her extensive work, she has created a Faculty Development Workshop on Critical Reflection in Medical Education. All the necessary resources for the workshop are available for free download, including PowerPoint slides, an instructor’s guide and lesson plans, examples of critical reflections, worksheets, and an evaluation form.
This database is the second Gold Foundation database. The first database focused on studies that illustrated how humanism supports the Quadruple Aim: Better Experience, Better Health, Lower Cost, and Joy of Work. Click here to visit the Database of Research.
