A gift for you on Giving Tuesday 2018

Tuesday, November 27, is “Giving Tuesday,” an international day of giving at the beginning of the holiday season. This year, The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is giving back! When you make a contribution to the Gold Foundation on Giving Tuesday, we will send you a gift as a token of our gratitude: a special, one-of-a-kind notebook.

This gift has a story behind it:

Dr. Wei Wei Lee and Dr. Lolita Alkureishi, of the University of Chicago, are medical investigators and professors whose work has been funded by the Gold Foundation. Most recently they have been studying how to ensure patient-centered communication in the era of the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Their work on the “computer-side manner” has changed the medical school curriculum. They have created instruction videos, published their findings in academic journals, and designed creative models to bring their discoveries to life at doctors’ appointments. Drs. Lee and Alkureishi’s work is featured in the December 2018 issue of Scientific American, “How to Cultivate a Warm Computer-Side Manner.”

Drs. Lee and Alkureishi also developed a wonderful, simple comic to illustrate best practices for using a computer during a medical appointment. This “A-B-C” illustration comes in versions for healthcare professionals, to remind them to include patients, and for patients, to demonstrate how they can be at the center during their visits. Drs. Lee and Alkureishi have shown that reading the comic leads to patients being more involved during their visits, asking more questions and participating in the update of their own EHR. Such connection and engagement is essential for optimal care.

Support humanism in healthcare with a donation to the Gold Foundation this Giving Tuesday (November 27), and we will send you this handy notebook to keep notes from your medical appointments. The cover lists A-B-C tips from Gold-funded researchers for how to get more involved in your appointments.

As a “thank you” for your contribution, the Gold Foundation will send you a notebook with these A-B-C tips on the cover, perfect for recording your questions, notes and reminders for your next doctor’s appointment. We hope you will find the tips helpful in communicating with your doctor, and use the notebook to make a real and measurable difference in your health.

To receive your gift, please write “Notebook” in the comments section of the donation page.

This has been a landmark year for the Gold Foundation. Not only does 2018 mark our 30th anniversary, it is also the year we lost our beloved co-founder, Dr. Arnold Gold. As we continue to carry out Arnold’s vision, we hope you will help us finish out the year stronger than ever.

As Dr. Lee and Dr. Alkureishi have shared, “Few organizations focus on humanism as a science – and that is why Gold is so important for the future of medicine.” And you, our close friends and allies, are important to the future of the Gold Foundation.

Thank you for your ongoing support. Together, we will Keep Healthcare Human.
