2023 Jordan J. Cohen Humanism in Medicine Lecture at the AAMC: “Confronting Misinformation and Mistrust”

The Gold Foundation, in partnership with the AAMC, sponsors the Jordan J. Cohen Humanism in Medicine Lecture at the AAMC Annual Meeting, which features prominent speakers on topics related to humanism and medicine.

Other past lecturers include Dr. George Thibault, immediate Past President of the Macy Foundation; Dr. Don Berwick, President Emeritus and Senior Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement; Dr. Louisa Aronson, geriatrician and Pulitzer Prize finalist for writing; Anna Quindlen, bestselling novelist and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist; and Dr. Abraham Verghese, Stanford Professor and author of Cutting for Stone.

Session description:

This session will explore the causes and consequences of the tidal wave of the co-joined challenges of misinformation and mistrust in the institutions of the society at large, and to the health of the American people specifically. Fidelity to the ethics of professionalism and the values of humanism requires not only intent, but also continuous learning in identifying appropriate and effective responses. Finally, a strategy will be presented that is intended to facilitate an interdisciplinary, large scale, multi-health sector response to these challenges in service to advancing the ability of the American people to make evidence-based, personally appropriate health choices for themselves, their families and the communities in which they live.
