The Dismantling Structural Racism to Advance Health Equity course, designed by Gold Course Directors Ruth S. Shim, MD, MPH, and Karinn Glover, MD, MPH, in collaboration with the NextGenU.org team and sponsored by the Gold Foundation, provides an introductory exploration of the key concepts related to health equity, including structural racism, health inequities, and social determinants of health. It is also open to anyone at any time.
ShareTools is a free resource to support health professions educators seeking to integrate humanities-based, anti-racism education for their learners. This resource leverages the power of the health humanities as a pedagogical tool, providing a comprehensive facilitator’s guide, detailed instructions for implementing curricular modules, an image library, and a collection of relevant music. Modules cover a variety of topics relevant to reflection, conversation, and action around racism, and draw upon a number of disciplines, including art, literature, anthropology, and the history of medicine.
Racial Equity Tools offers 600+ resources (tools, research tips, curricula and ideas) to support individuals and groups working to achieve racial equity by increasing their understanding and helping those working for racial justice at every level – in systems, organizations, communities, and the culture at large.
This collection of library resources, videos, articles, books, art, podcasts, faculty development resources and more on cultural diversity, anti-racism and inclusion was developed by student members at Cooper Medical School at Rowan University’s Gold Humanism Honor Society chapter. They created this librarian-supported, long-term effort to bring volumes with new perspectives to the medical library, with the intention to inspire and continue the difficult but vital conversations around anti-racism in America.
The JEDI Toolkit is a resource created by faculty members at the University of North Carolina that includes basic tips for how to get started with this work, approaches to self-reflection, and videos and links related to implicit bias and frameworks for how to address microaggressions.
The IDEA Resources collection from University of Minnesota Libraries includes a guide on conducting research through an anti-racism lens; anti-racism reading lists; and links to other resources and collections related to fostering inclusive healthcare. It is intended to to support IDEA conversations and curriculum development, provide culturally appropriate care, and broaden understanding around the intersection of health and marginalization.
Step Up! offers evidence-based strategies for being a bystander/upstander and effectively helping in a challenging emergency or non-emergency situation, including the 5 D’s – Direct, Distract, Delegate, Delay, Document, and example scripts.
The Docs with Disabilities Initiative uses research, education, and sharing of stories to drive change in perceptions, disability policy, and procedures in health professions, biomedical and science education. Their aim is to build more inclusive educational environments for trainees with disabilities and increase representation of disabled clinicians and scientists in the biomedical workforce. The website offers research articles, live and recorded webinars, podcasts, and more resources.
Age-Friendly Health Systems is a resource from the John A. Hartford Foundation, which aims to promote health care that is safe and based on what research shows are the most important things to pay attention to as we get older – the 4Ms: what Matters, Medication, Mentation and Mobility. This resource for clinicians is about reliably delivering the 4Ms of Age-Friendly care to older adults in all settings.
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) offers a digital collection of books, manuscripts, and still and moving images that document how people think about, experience, and adapt to changes that come with aging. They document recommendations of medical professionals and public health officials for maintaining health and improving quality of life. They also highlight scientific research related to the aging process and illnesses that occur later in life, and they reveal many stories at the intersection of individual and public health.
EthnoMed aims to be a convenient source for social and cultural details relevant to clinical care. The website was developed through relationships between programs at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle and several of the larger ethnic communities they serve. They aim to provide cultural context when working with immigrants and refugees in this region.
Structural competency is the capacity for health professionals to recognize and respond to health and illness as the downstream effects of broad social, political, and economic structures. The idea is based on the recognition that oft-invisible structural level determinates, biases, inequities, and blind spots shape definitions of health and illness long before doctors or patients enter examination rooms. IDEAS is a monthly webinar series hosted by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) that brings in experts from across academic medicine to help attendees foster inclusive environments; create equitable advancement, promotion, and tenure policies; and promote anti-racist policies, education, and institutional practices.
Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Equity Matters™ is a structured, self-paced educational experience that includes videos, modules, articles, and more, to support continuous learning and process improvement in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and antiracism practices. Login is required to access the content however it is free.
Diversity and Inclusion Toolkit Resources is a resource from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) that includes downloadable workshop slides, facilitator guides, exercises, links to related websites and toolkits, and more on topics including Power and Privilege, Microaggressions, Identity, and Cross-Cultural Communication, tools for Diversity and Inclusion Officers and faculty.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Competencies Across the Learning Continuum is a resource from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) that aims to help educators design and deliver curricula and related activities and help learners with their individual professional development in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
AACN created this teaching resource for nursing students which includes themes such as allyship, health equity, and moral courage.
These themes are intended to help new nurses more fully understand their role as caregiver as well as the settings and systems in which they will practice. Each theme is introduced and followed by a Reflection exercise that can be used to engage students in a deeper conversation about role expectations and the practice of nursing. Related resources and recommended readings also are included to spark further study of the identified theme.
This PDF toolkit created by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) offers practices and strategies for nursing schools to organize and guide diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, including promoting welcoming academic environments, and aims to serve as a catalyst for reflection and assessment of current pedagogy, teaching methods, and curricular strategies for inclusive teaching and learning environments.
Women of Color on the Front Lines: Portraits of Unsung Heroes aims to challenge the narrative about who in this country is on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19 by honoring black, indigenous, and women of color physicians and other healthcare workers with portraits reflecting their determination, talent and tireless work. Healthcare workers from around the country submitted photos of themselves from the front lines, and artists transformed these photos into art. Each portrait is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices these women make daily to serve the communities in which they live and work.
